No plant is truly poisoned by kelp, so the honest answer is short. The real plants that dislike kelp are the ones hit with too strong a dose, plus a handful of crops that barely react to it at all. Used at label strength, seaweed fertilizer for plants is gentle and safe across the board. Trouble shows up when you mix it too rich, not because one species hates the kelp itself. Get your dose right and your beds will take it well, whatever you are growing in them.
The browned, crispy edges showed up on one corner of the strawberry patch by the back raised bed. I sprayed that row with a mix far stronger than the bottle called for. Three days later the outer leaf margins were scorched a dry tan, while the rest of the bed stayed deep green. I dropped back to label strength on the next spray and the new growth came in clean. For three seasons of growing those same berries I never saw a burned edge again. The kelp was never the issue. My heavy hand was.
Kelp is a mild biostimulant, not a strong feed. It carries trace minerals and natural plant hormones, but the amounts are tiny. So the problem is rarely a plant hating kelp. Most of the time a crop just does not respond much, and any plant can react badly when the dose runs too high. Strength, not species, is what burns leaves. Salt and minerals pile up fast on the leaf surface when you over-mix. The edges dry out and turn that same scorched tan you would see on any over-sprayed bed. A weak spray sidesteps all of it, so you get the gentle benefits without the risk.
Some crops sit in the kelp low response crops group, where you can spray all season and see no real change. Field studies found little or no measurable effect on cabbage head yield and on apple growth and leaf minerals. The plants were fine. They just did not gain anything you could point to. Peppers and several perennials landed in the same flat zone in those trials. I noticed the same flat result on my own cabbages, where a kelp spray made no visible difference next to an unsprayed row. Dose matters too. In one study, seedling germination dropped to near zero at a strong 1.0% extract, while a weak mix let almost every seed sprout. The same kelp helped at a low rate and hurt at a high one.
Keep your doses weak for every plant, even the tough ones. A spray at or below label strength gives you all the upside with none of the burn risk. When in doubt, mix it thinner than you think you need and spray more often instead. Do not expect much from the low-response crops, since the science just is not there for them. You can still spray them safely, but plan as if the kelp does nothing and treat any boost as a bonus. And where a plant needs real nitrogen to push leafy growth, reach for compost or a proper nitrogen feed instead. Kelp meal runs low on the big nutrients, often near a 1-0-2 balance, so it backs up a feeding plan but cannot replace one. Use it as a gentle helper and your whole garden stays happy with it. I always cut my kelp mix on the weak side now, and nothing in the beds has shown a burned edge since.
