Fading lower branches and bluish-white resin dried onto the bark
Cytospora canker tends to settle on a tree already strained by drought or heat, claiming one scattered lower branch at a time and breaking the clean line of the lower trunk. The clue is a hard, bluish-white crust of dried sap near the base of a failing branch. No spray cures it, so the remedy is to prune the dead wood out in dry weather, sterilize tools between cuts, and keep the tree watered and mulched to ease the underlying stress.
