A Douglas fir counts as a true fir, no different from white, Fraser, and balsam fir.

Reality

Douglas-fir sits in the genus Pseudotsuga and is not a true fir at all. The true firs of the genus Abies carry their seed cones upright along the branch and let them break apart where they stand, and each needle meets the twig on a flat, round base that leaves the bark smooth. A Douglas-fir cone hangs downward, drops in one piece, and reveals three-pointed bracts, while spruces leave small woody pegs behind wherever a needle falls.
