Yes, sulfate of potash burn grass is possible, but it rarely happens when you use the feed right. Spread it thin, water it in, and your lawn stays green. The fertilizer scorch you might fear comes from heavy dumping or from dry granules left on the blades. It does not come from the feed itself at a normal rate. You hold most of the control here, not the bag.

"That potash will scorch your lawn brown," my neighbor said, leaning over the fence by the fruit cage. He had used something cheap years back and watched a strip of his own grass go crisp. I spread mine thin that weekend and watered it in well. The grass came up greener than before, with not a single burnt patch anywhere along the line he had warned me about.

Scorch is a salt problem at its core. When you pile fertilizer salt onto a leaf, it pulls water back out of the plant tissue. The blade then dries and browns right where the salt sits. The more concentrated the salt, the faster this happens, and the worse the burn ends up looking on your lawn.

This is where sulfate of potash stands apart from the cheaper potash feeds. It has a low salt index, under a third of muriate of potash in solution. That means it pulls far less water out of the leaf for the same amount of potassium you put down. So the burn risk drops well below what a high-salt product would hand you on the same grass.

It helps to picture what the salt index actually measures. It compares how much a feed raises the salt level in soil water against a set amount of sodium nitrate. A lower number means less of that osmotic pull on the leaf and root. Sulfate of potash sits near the bottom of the list, which is why it feeds your grass without the harsh edge of a high-salt product.

Where The Burn Starts

Dry granules left on the grass blades are the main danger, not the feed itself at the correct rate. Each granule is a small pile of concentrated salt resting on living tissue.

The real risk is not the feed at the right rate. It is undissolved granules sitting dry on the blades through a warm afternoon. Each one is a tiny heap of concentrated salt on living tissue. That small dry spot is the exact place a brown fleck shows up a few days later, long after you have put the spreader away and forgotten the job.

So spread it evenly at a modest rate and resist the urge to add a bit extra for good measure. Walk the lawn at a steady pace and overlap your passes a little so no patch gets a double dose. An even hand protects the grass more than any single feature printed on the bag. Slow down at the turns, where it is easy to dump too much in one place.

After spreading, brush the granules off the blades so they drop down to the soil. A light pass with a stiff broom or the back of a rake knocks them off fast. Then water it in well until the granules dissolve and nothing sits dry on the grass through the heat of the day. Half an inch of water is plenty to carry the feed down to the roots.

If a mild scorch does show up, the grass usually grows out of it. Keep the area watered and hold off on any more feed for a few weeks. New blades push up clean once the salt washes down past the roots. A real burn from sulfate of potash is shallow, so your lawn recovers far faster than it would from a strong, salty feed.

Get those three things right and a burn becomes hard to cause. Sulfate of potash will green your lawn and feed the roots without the brown streaks people expect from a feed. The product is forgiving, and your rate and your watering are what decide how the grass looks once the feed goes down.
