I found the older leaves on my Sungold tomato gone pale, a washed-out yellow between the veins. The veins themselves stayed green, drawn like a road map across each leaf. That bed sat against the south-facing fence, and I had fed it a heavy hand of potash all season.
Yes, you can absolutely put too much potash in soil, and the plants will tell on you. Too much potassium excess does not burn your garden to the ground overnight. It works in the background, quietly throwing the other nutrients out of balance until the leaves start to fade.
Overdosing potash rarely poisons plants outright. The usual damage is nutrient lockout, where excess potassium blocks magnesium and calcium and leaves older leaves yellowing between the veins.
Here is what happens at the roots. Potassium, magnesium, and calcium all get pulled in through the same gates on the root surface. When potassium floods the soil, it crowds those gates and shoves the other two aside. The plant can't grab enough magnesium, so the older leaves go yellow first. That pale stripe between green veins is a textbook magnesium deficiency. It shows up on the oldest leaves because the plant robs them to feed the new shoots up top.
Calcium gets blocked the same way. In tomatoes that often turns into blossom end rot, where the bottom of the fruit caves in and goes brown. The soil might hold plenty of calcium. The plant just can't reach it past the wall of potassium.
There's a second problem on top of the lockout. Potash is a salt. Even a gentle, low-salt feed like sulfate of potash is still a salt at heart. Penn State and the IPNI both point out that over-applying it raises the salt level in your soil over time. Higher salt makes it harder for roots to pull in water. The damage comes from imbalance and salt buildup, not from any poison in the bag.
So the harm is slow and sneaky, not a quick knockout. That's exactly why it catches careful gardeners off guard. You keep adding potash because the fruit looks small or the color seems off, and you make the lockout worse with every scoop.
Before you reach for the bag again, get a real soil test. A cheap mail-in test tells you your actual potassium level, and most gardens already sit higher than people guess. If your numbers are fine, more potash does nothing good and a lot of quiet harm. Wood ash is a common sneaky source too, since a single bucket can spike potassium fast. So can heavy use of tomato feed, which leans hard on the K in N-P-K.
- Test first: Run a soil test before adding any potash so you treat a real shortage, not a hunch.
- Split the dose: If you do need to feed, break a large amount into two or three smaller applications across the season.
- Ease off, don't add: Correct lockout by stopping potash, not by piling on magnesium or calcium to fight it.
- Water deeply a few times to help flush extra salt down past the root zone.
The fix for an overdose feels backwards. When you see that yellow-between-the-veins look, the instinct is to dose magnesium with Epsom salts. A little can help short term, but the real cure is to stop feeding potash and let the balance settle. Adding more of everything just keeps the fight going at the roots.
My Sungold bed came back the next year once I quit the potash and let a couple of good rains rinse the soil. The new leaves grew in solid green. Keep your potash light, test before you feed, and your plants will hold their color all season long.
