Epsom salt fixes epsom salt yellow leaves only when the real cause is a true magnesium shortage. It does nothing for any other reason a leaf turns yellow. Gardeners often grab it as a cure-all, but it supplies just two nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. So it can only correct a problem that comes from a lack of those two.
That single fact rules out most cases. Many of the magnesium deficiency plants you try to treat are not short on magnesium at all. Your leaves are yellow for a reason a dose of salts can never touch. So before you reach for the box, you need to read the pattern on the leaf and figure out what is really going on.
Magnesium is a mobile nutrient. When your soil runs low, the plant pulls it out of older growth and sends it up to the new shoots. So the yellowing starts on the oldest, lowest leaves first. The classic sign is interveinal yellowing. The tissue between the veins fades to yellow, while the veins stay green. That leaves a green skeleton on a pale leaf. Now look at the other usual causes. They look different on the leaf, and they each need a different fix. So you want to tell them apart before you treat anything.

- Sandy or heavily leached soils that lose magnesium fast after lots of rain or watering.
- Soggy soil and droopy leaves from overwatering, where wet roots cannot take up nutrients.
- Yellowing on new top leaves with green veins, which points to iron lockout at high pH.
- Even, all-over yellowing on old leaves from a nitrogen shortage, not magnesium.
The contrast matters for your plant. Maybe the leaf is yellow from too much water. Then the roots are too wet to pull in food. Maybe it is yellow from iron lockout. Then the soil pH is too high and the iron is locked away, not gone. Maybe it is short on nitrogen. Then your plant needs nitrogen, and Epsom salt has none. In each of these cases the salt does no good.
Worse, it can set your plant back. When you add salts to roots that are already stressed from soggy soil or a pH problem, you pile more strain on a plant that is struggling. You can scorch the fine feeder roots. You can tip the soil chemistry further out of balance. So a wrong guess here is not a harmless one. You may end up with a plant in worse shape than when you started.
Here is the safe way to use epsom salt for plants. First, match the symptom to magnesium. Look for that interveinal pattern on the older leaves before anything else. Second, confirm it with a soil test. A cheap test tells you whether magnesium is actually low or whether the real trouble is water, pH, or nitrogen. Only treat once the test backs up what the leaves are showing.
Treat the cause, not the color. A yellow leaf is just a symptom, and the same color can come from very different problems. Epsom salt is a fix for one of them, not a tonic for all of them. So read the pattern on your leaves and run the test. Then you will know whether the box on the shelf is the right tool or the wrong one for your plant.
