No. I dug rock phosphate into my alkaline raised bed by the patio one spring. That soil sits at pH 7.6. My peppers stayed small and pale all summer long. I waited a full season and got thin stems, weak blooms, and a handful of sad fruit. The amendment may as well have been gravel. So if you have a rock phosphate alkaline soil pairing like mine, expect it to do almost nothing for you.
What threw me was that the same bag had worked the year before. I had worked it into a sandy bed in the back garden that sat at pH 5.8. Those plants took off fast. They grew deep green leaves and set heavy fruit. Same product, same rate, two very different results. The only thing that changed was the soil pH phosphorus could reach. That one factor decided everything in both beds.
The reason is simple once you see it. Rock phosphate is a slow mineral that needs acid to break down and free its phosphorus. Acidic ground gives it that acid. Alkaline ground does not. So the mineral just sits in your soil as solid rock dust and feeds nothing. You can spread more of it and still get the same result.
CSU Extension explains the chemistry well. Soil at pH 7.5 and above tends to hold a lot of calcium. That calcium grabs the phosphorus and locks it up. It forms an insoluble calcium-phosphate compound that roots cannot use. This calcium phosphate binding is the real reason the mineral fails up there. The phosphorus is still in your ground, but it is tied up and out of reach. Lower the pH and that lock loosens. Raise it and the lock gets tighter. So your pH reading tells you, before you spend a cent, whether the product can help at all.
Field data backs this up hard. CSU ran a two-year trial on alkaline soil at pH 7.8. The rock phosphate gave no real rise in soil phosphorus. It also gave no yield gain over an untreated control. Two seasons of work and money went in. The treated plots matched the plots that got nothing at all. That is about as plain a verdict as soil science gives you. If your beds run alkaline, you would see the same flat result.
Test your soil first. Rock phosphate pays off below pH 7 and works best between pH 6.0 and 7.0. Above pH 7.5 it is wasted money.
So what should you use instead if your ground runs alkaline? Reach for a phosphorus source that is already soluble. You want one that does not need acid to release. Superphosphate dissolves and feeds your plants right away no matter your pH. Bone meal is another solid pick. It breaks down faster than raw rock and gives your roots phosphorus they can take up now. Both cost about the same as rock phosphate. And both will produce a real response in your beds this season. You can also mix either one into compost to spread it more evenly through the bed.
Your other path is to fix the pH first. You do that before you plant anything hungry for phosphorus. Work elemental sulfur into the soil over a season or two. That slowly pulls an alkaline bed down toward neutral. Once you get under pH 7, rock phosphate starts to earn its keep. This is the slow route and it takes patience. But it changes the chemistry of the whole bed instead of fighting it. Until you get there, save your rock phosphate for acidic ground. Spend your money where it actually pays off.
