A single small milkweed or violet can vanish in days. A row of hungry caterpillars chews it down to bare stems. Any larvae that hatch later find nothing left to eat. That is why host plant quantity matters so much in your garden. Your rule is simple. Plant several of each host species instead of setting out one lonely specimen. One plant is a gamble. A small cluster is a real food supply that can carry a brood through to the end.
Caterpillars eat a lot. A growing larva can put away many times its own body weight before it pupates. Most of that feeding hits in a short stretch near the end of its larval life. One small herbaceous plant rarely carries a full brood that far. So you want to plant more than one of each host. Quantity counts here as much as picking the right species. You can have the perfect plant and still lose your caterpillars if you only set out one of it.
Run the math from the plant's side. A young milkweed might hold a dozen tender leaves. A single female can lay far more eggs than that across a few visits. Once those eggs hatch, the leaf supply runs out fast. The late hatchlings then starve on a stripped stem. When you spread the load across several plants, you give every caterpillar room to feed. You also give the slow starters a real shot at reaching their next stage instead of going hungry.
Penn State Extension makes this point plainly. The guidance is to set out more than one specimen of each host. They push that advice even harder for small herbaceous plants like milkweed, violets, and dill. These soft, low hosts get stripped the fastest. So you need backups standing by from the start. A patch of three or five beats one big plant on its own every time you do the count. The same logic holds for parsley and fennel, two more tender hosts that disappear under a hungry brood.
There is a timing angle too. Females do not lay all their eggs at once. They drift back over days or weeks and add a few eggs at a time. So your patch needs to feed early hatchlings and still have leaves left for the ones that arrive later. A single plant cannot stretch that far. A small cluster can. When you set out several hosts, you build a supply that lasts across the whole egg-laying window instead of running dry in the first wave.
Grouping also helps the butterflies do their job. A searching female scans for color and shape as she flies. A tight patch of butterfly host plants reads as a much bigger target than one stem lost in the border. When you cluster the same host together, you make it easier for her to land, lay, and move on. You build a small buffer too. Heavy feeding on one plant will not wipe out your whole supply if you have a few more right beside it.
So how many is enough? It depends on the plant you are working with. For small herbaceous hosts, scale up and aim for at least three to five of each. Plant more if you have the space and the appetite for it. Larger woody hosts work the other way. A mature oak, willow, or spicebush already carries thousands of leaves. One well-placed shrub or tree can feed plenty of caterpillars on its own. Right-size the count to the host. Do not use one number for everything in the bed.
Your plan comes down to this. Treat host plant quantity as part of the design, not an afterthought. Plant in clusters, not singles. Group several of each small host together. Give the leaf-hungry species the most plants on your list. Let one good woody host stand in for a whole grove. Do that and your garden keeps food on the table through the full feeding window. That is exactly what turns your eggs into butterflies.
