Is sulfate of potash better than muriate of potash?

Two open bags sat at my feet beside the raised acidic bed where my blueberry bushes had grown for six seasons. One was a cheap chloride feed. The other was sulfate of potash, the chloride-free bag that cost more. I scooped the sulfate. Blueberries hate salt, and these roots had earned the gentle feed.

So when people ask me about sulfate vs muriate of potash, my honest answer is that neither one is better across the board. It depends on the crop. The right pick changes with what you grow, the soil you grow it in, and how much you can spend per bag.

The split comes down to what rides along with the potassium. Muriate of potash carries more of it, around 60 to 62%, so you feed more potassium per pound. But it brings chloride and a higher salt load with it. Sulfate of potash sits near 50% potassium, yet it skips the chloride and runs lower on salt. As a chloride-free potash, sulfate also feeds your soil sulfur, which many of your crops use to build protein and flavor.

That chloride matters more than the spec sheet lets on. If you grow salt-sensitive plants like berries, beans, or young fruit trees, chloride can stall them or scorch the leaf edges as it builds up in your soil. Tough field crops shrug it off, so for them the extra potassium in muriate becomes a clean win and you lose nothing by saving money.

Now for the potash cost comparison, because price often decides this for you. Penn State lists sulfate of potash as the most expensive sulfur source at $1.35 per pound of sulfur. Muriate runs about 40 to 50% cheaper per unit of potassium. On a big plot that gap adds up fast across a season. So the cheaper bag is hard to ignore when your crop tolerates chloride and you watch the budget.

Quality can tip the math back the other way. A 2022 Frontiers study found that potatoes fed sulfate held onto more starch and better flavor than those fed the chloride form. So if you sell your fruit, berries, or potatoes by taste and storage life, that edge can be worth the higher price you pay at the register. Your customers taste the difference, and that keeps them coming back to your stand.

Corn, wheat, and most grasses fall in that camp, so you save real money there with no downside.

Whichever bag you choose, test your soil first so you only add potassium when it is truly low. Over-feeding potassium wastes your money and can block other nutrients your plants need. Spread your chosen feed at a modest rate and water it in well. Then check the leaves over the next few weeks. The deep, even green tells you the dose landed right.
