When you weigh fibrous roots vs taproots for erosion, fibrous roots win for surface washout in most yards. They spread sideways into a dense mat that holds your top soil in place. Taproots dig deep, but deep is not where your soil starts to slip. So if your slope keeps shedding dirt after rain, lean on plants with thick, spreading root systems for erosion control. That choice does more for your hill than any single deep root ever will.
"You want the deep-rooted stuff back there," my neighbor said, leaning over the fence and pointing at my bare back slope. "A taproot grabs way down. That is what holds a hill." I planted little bluestem and creeping phlox instead. By spring their roots had knit the loose surface into a firm layer. The small gullies that used to cut in after every storm never came back. My neighbor stopped bringing it up.
Here is why that happened. Most erosion strips the top few inches of your soil. That thin layer is the part rain and runoff touch first. A fibrous root system fills that exact zone with a tangled web of thin roots. You end up with thousands of roots packed into one square foot of ground. Each one grabs hold of the surface and keeps it from sliding.
The University of Maine Extension backs this up. Jonathan Foster, a horticulturist there, made the point in 2022. A spreading web of fibrous roots holds surface soil better than one deep taproot. His reason is simple. The top layer is where erosion does its damage. So the roots that fill that layer are the ones that matter most for your slope. You want them packed in thick and wide.
That tangled web is the whole trick behind surface soil binding. Each thin root wraps around soil grains and ties them to the roots beside it. Stack thousands of those grips into one patch and you get a mat that runoff cannot peel away. A taproot anchors one plant against a hard pull, and that is real strength. But it leaves the soil between your plants loose and open to the next storm.

The bare ground between those plants is still free to wash.
You can see the gap in how the two cover ground. A fibrous-rooted grass might send out a root web a foot or two across in its first full season. A young taproot plant the same age may sink straight down with little to spare on the sides. On a slope, the sides are what you care about. The more ground your roots blanket, the less open soil you leave for the next hard rain to carry off.
So pick dense fibrous-rooted grasses, sedges, and mat-forming ground covers as your main defense on a slope. Little bluestem, prairie dropseed, sedges, and creeping phlox spread fast and lock your surface down. Use deeper-rooted shrubs as partners, not the whole plan. The shrubs add height and reach moisture below. Your grasses and ground covers do the real work of holding soil through every storm you get.
