A fist-sized coir brick looks tiny next to a bag of potting mix on the shelf. Drop it in a bucket of water and it swells until it fills a whole tub. That trick is the whole reason the coco coir cost can beat soil on raw volume, as long as you measure it the right way.
The honest answer is yes and no. By weight a compressed brick is cheap. A Colorado State Extension fact sheet calls coir an inexpensive soil amendment. But coir is inert. The price on the label is not the price you pay to grow in it. The real coco coir cost shows up over a full season, not at the till.
Here is the economics behind the cheap sticker. A dry brick is mostly squeezed-out air and water, so it is light and small. That makes it cheap to ship and easy to store on a shelf. Once you soak it, it expands five to six times its packed size. So a brick that weighs barely more than a pound can hand you a large bin of fluffy medium. That expansion is where the real coir brick value lives, and it is why you should never judge the price by the brick.
Now the catch. Soil and bagged potting mix usually come pre-loaded with compost and fertilizer, so the plants have something to eat from day one. Coir does not. It holds water and air well, but it carries almost no nutrients of its own. You have to feed it the whole time the plant grows. That feeding is a running cost, and it is the part most people forget when they brag about a cheap brick. Over a few months a bottle of nutrient mix can cost more than the coir did.
How long the medium lasts changes the math too. Coir breaks down slower than peat and many soil mixes, so you can rinse it and reuse it for a second or even third grow. Soil packs down and loses structure faster, so you top it up or replace it more often. Spread the brick price across two or three uses and the cost per grow drops again. That reuse is a quiet part of the savings most price checks leave out.
There is one more line item. Fresh coir often holds extra salts and tends to grab calcium and magnesium away from your plants. To fix that you rinse the coir and add a Cal-Mag feed, or you buy pre-buffered coir that costs a bit more up front. Either way you spend a little money or time before the medium is ready, and that belongs in your math too.
So how do you compare coir vs potting soil price in a fair way? Do not line up the brick against the bag. Work out the cost per liter of finished, soaked medium instead. A two dollar brick that yields eight liters can undercut a soil bag with ease. Then add the running cost of feed for coir, since the bag already has some baked in.
For seed starting and as a soil add-in, coir wins on cost most of the time because you use little feed and lean on its water holding. A single brick can fill dozens of seed cells, which makes the per-tray price tiny. For a full container grow where the plant lives in coir for months, the feeding bill closes the gap fast and can even pass a basic soil mix.
So budget for three things, not one. Pay for the brick, pay for the feed, and pay for any rinse or buffering up front. Add those together, divide by the liters of soaked medium you end up with, and you have the real number. Compare that against soil by the same expanded volume. Do the math that way and you will know the true price before you ever soak a brick.
