Yes and no. Reversing soil erosion has two parts, and they move at very different speeds. You can stop active erosion in a single season by covering bare ground, but the lost soil itself comes back over years, not weeks. A raw gully that ate at a slope each rain will stop growing once roots hold the banks. The deep, dark layer it carried away takes far longer to build again.

Stopping the bleeding is the fast win. Bare, exposed dirt is what erosion feeds on, so plant cover is the quickest way to heal eroded soil. Once fibrous roots grab the surface, raindrops hit leaves instead of loose grains, and runoff slows to a crawl. Many sites go from washing out to holding firm within one growing season of solid cover.

Rebuilding the soil is the slow part. Topsoil forms when plants, roots, and microbes add organic matter year after year, and that pace is measured in decades. Nature builds roughly an inch of new topsoil over hundreds of years, while a single storm on bare ground can strip that same inch in an afternoon. The two clocks do not match, which is why the loss side hurts so much.

The scale of past topsoil loss drives the point home. A study from the University of Massachusetts shows the damage. Researcher Evan Thaler and his team looked at the U.S. Midwest. They found the region has shed about 57.6 billion metric tons of topsoil since farmers first settled there. That layer held the nutrients and water that made the land so productive. You cannot make it back overnight, no matter how much you spend on the ground. The numbers show why the loss side of the ledger is so painful for any grower.

So what does real recovery look like on a single site? Start by getting living cover over every patch of bare soil, since exposed ground is where the damage keeps happening. Pick fibrous-rooted plants like grasses or groundcovers that knit a dense mat near the surface. These shallow, branching roots hold the top few inches far better than a single deep taproot does. Lay mulch over thin spots to shield them while seedlings take hold, and reseed any gaps you find after the first hard rain.

Water management matters just as much as plants. Slow the water with low berms, swales, or simple check dams so runoff drops its load instead of carving new channels. On a steep slope, terracing breaks one long, fast slide of water into short, gentle steps. Each break gives the soil a chance to soak up moisture rather than shed it. Aim to keep water on your land as long as you can, because every drop that lingers feeds plants instead of cutting a gully.

Once the surface stops moving, the rebuild can finally begin. Roots die back and feed the soil, leaves drop and break down, and worms and microbes pull that material deeper. Organic matter climbs a little each year, and the ground holds more water and resists the next storm better. Adding compost or aged manure speeds this along by feeding the soil life directly. You will see the surface stabilize within a year or two. You will wait far longer to see the soil itself grow deep and rich again.

The honest takeaway is that prevention beats repair by a wide margin. Reversing soil erosion after the fact costs a fraction more time and effort than simply never letting it start. Stopping the damage before it begins is far cheaper than healing a scarred slope. Keep the ground covered, keep roots in the soil, and slow the water that crosses your land. Protecting good soil while you still have it is the most realistic way to keep it for the long run.
