What are the most common micronutrient deficiencies in plants?

The three common micronutrient deficiencies you will run into most are iron, manganese, and zinc. They show up far more often than any other trace nutrient shortage in home gardens and pots. The good news is that each one leaves a different mark on the leaves, so you can read which nutrient is missing without a lab test.

My container Meyer lemon sits by the patio. One spring I found its newest leaves lit up yellow between still-green veins, like little panes of stained glass. The older leaves below stayed a deep solid green. That split is the tell. New growth bright, old growth dark. It was iron deficiency, and the pattern named it before the color did.

Here is the logic that makes diagnosis easy. Iron, manganese, and zinc are immobile inside the plant. Once they land in a leaf, the plant cannot pull them back out and ship them to fresh growth. So when supply runs short, the newest leaves at the tips starve first while the old leaves stay fine. Spot yellowing on young growth and you have already cut your suspect list down to these three.

After that, the color pattern sorts out which one it is. Iron shows clean interveinal chlorosis, where the tissue between the veins turns yellow but the veins themselves stay a sharp green. Manganese looks similar at a glance. But its yellowing comes in as a speckled, mottled wash, not the crisp net of green veins you see with iron. When two problems look alike, the texture of the yellow is what splits them.

Zinc plays a different game. It does not give you dramatic yellowing. Instead, zinc shortage gives you small, narrow new leaves with crowded spacing along the stem and stunted growth. The plant looks bunched and runty at the tips. If new leaves are tiny and crowded rather than full-size and yellow, point your finger at zinc first.

Iron deficiency

  • Pattern: Iron deficiency shows interveinal chlorosis, where leaf tissue yellows while the veins stay green.
  • Where: Because iron is immobile, symptoms appear first on the newest, youngest leaves at the growing tips.
  • Common cause: It often follows high soil pH on alkaline soils, which locks up iron even when the soil contains enough.

Manganese deficiency

  • Pattern: Manganese shortage produces speckled or mottled yellowing between the veins of young leaves.
  • Where: Manganese is immobile, so the speckling shows up on new growth rather than older foliage.
  • Note: It can look like iron deficiency, so check whether the yellowing is even or speckled to tell them apart.

Zinc deficiency

  • Pattern: Zinc shortage causes small new leaves, shortened spacing between leaves, and stunted overall growth.
  • Where: Zinc is immobile in the plant, so the smallest, most distorted leaves appear on fresh growth.
  • Common cause: Zinc availability falls on high pH soils, and sandy soils are more likely to run genuinely short.

Before you reach for a bottle of chelated iron, check your soil pH. This is the step most people skip, and it costs them. Most common micronutrient deficiencies trace back to pH, not a true lack of nutrients. On alkaline soil above a pH of about 7.0, iron, manganese, and zinc get chemically locked up. The nutrients are sitting right there in the ground, but the roots cannot pull them in. You can dump trace minerals all season and see no change.

So treat the cause, not just the symptom. If a pH test reads high, lower it with elemental sulfur. For pots, feed with an acidic fertilizer made for citrus or azaleas. On sandy soils a real shortage is more likely, and a balanced micronutrient feed fixes it fast. Read the new leaves, match the pattern, then check the pH. That order saves you money and gets your plants green again.
