The main varieties of sunflowers fall into five classes. You get giants, dwarfs, branching cut types, pollenless florist types, and colored novelty types. Each class fits a different garden plan.
I tested four sunflower cultivars in one garden bed last summer. The bed was just 8 ft (2.4 m) wide. I wanted to see how the types of sunflowers compared in real life.
The giants topped 12 ft (3.7 m) by August. The dwarfs stayed knee-high all season. Bees crowded the pollen-rich heads. They ignored the pollenless ones in my row.
The genus Helianthus has 52 native species per the USDA Forest Service. Almost every garden plant you buy traces back to one parent. That parent is *Helianthus annuus*. Breeders pulled height, color, and bloom traits from this one species.
Giant Sunflowers
- Height range: These tall giant sunflowers reach 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.7 m) with heads as wide as a dinner plate.
- Top cultivar: Mammoth Russian is the gold standard heirloom. The US first sold it in 1893. Its seed heads pack full of striped seeds.
- Best for: Backyard borders, wildlife plots, kid projects, and harvesting seeds for snacks or bird feeders all winter.
Dwarf Sunflowers
- Height range: Compact dwarf sunflowers stay between 1 and 3 feet (30 to 90 cm). They rarely need staking in normal wind.
- Top cultivar: Teddy Bear grows to 2 or 3 feet (60 to 90 cm). It has fluffy double blooms that look like golden pom-poms.
- Best for: Patio pots, window boxes, front-of-border plantings, and small spaces where height would block sight lines.
Branching Cut-Flower Types
- Bloom habit: One plant makes 5 to 20 stems instead of one huge head. This keeps the bouquet supply going for weeks.
- Top cultivar: Velvet Queen has deep mahogany red petals. The blooms hold up well in a vase for 7 to 10 days.
- Best for: Cutting gardens, market growers, and anyone who wants fresh blooms every Sunday morning through fall.
Pollenless Florist Types
- Key trait: Bred to drop no pollen. Tablecloths and shirts stay clean during indoor arrangements at weddings or parties.
- Top cultivar: ProCut Orange has been the florist standard since the 1990s. It has strong stems and a bright clean face.
- Best for: Indoor bouquets, event centerpieces, and people with pollen allergies who still want sunny blooms inside.
Match the class to your goal before you buy seed. Want a kid project or wildlife? Pick giants. Want pots on a balcony? Pick dwarfs.
