What ground cover is best for erosion control on slopes?

The best ground cover for erosion control on slopes is a dense-rooted spreader. Good picks are creeping juniper, creeping phlox, Carolina jessamine, and St. John's-wort. These plants knit the soil together fast. Their roots take over the loose dirt and hold the bank in place.

One wet spring I planted creeping juniper into the bare front slope by the driveway. The bank was washing badly. I cut a shallow shelf across the grade for each plug and set them in. Then I rolled coir netting down the loose soil and pinned it tight with steel staples every foot. The next storm pushed water across the bank. The netting held every clump of dirt while the new roots reached down. By late summer the juniper had spread over the mesh, and the staples sat buried under new green growth.

That mesh is what makes slope planting work in the first season. Bare soil on a grade washes away with the first hard rain, long before young plants can grab hold. The right ground cover for slopes changes that. Spreading roots bind the loose soil into a mat and slow stormwater so it soaks in instead of running off and carving channels.

The mechanism is simple once you see it. Each plant sends out shallow runners and a web of fine roots that wrap around soil particles like a net. That root web stays put through dry spells and cold, so even where the leaves die back in winter, the roots keep gripping the bank. Dense-rooted spreaders beat clumping plants on slopes because they cover every inch of ground with living anchors.

Creeping Juniper

  • Height: Stays low at 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) and spreads wide to cover the bank fast.
  • Roots: Tough, far-reaching roots hold dry, sunny slopes that bake in full afternoon heat.
  • Best for: Open banks with poor soil where grass refuses to grow at all.

Creeping Phlox

  • Type: Native creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera) carpets shaded and part-sun slopes with low mats.
  • Bloom: Spring flowers cover the bank while the roots quietly bind the soil below.
  • Best for: Gentle grades and woodland edges that get morning sun and afternoon shade.

Carolina Jessamine

  • Habit: A vigorous vine that sprawls across steep banks too sharp for upright plants.
  • Coverage: Trailing stems root as they spread, knitting a thick mat over loose ground.
  • Best for: Steep slopes in sun to part shade where you need fast, heavy cover.

St. John's-wort

  • Roots: Spreading roots and stems lock down steep banks and tolerate rough soil well.
  • Care: Needs little water once set, which suits hard-to-reach upper slopes.
  • Best for: Sunny steep grades that you cannot mow or hand-water often.

Whatever you plant, you have to hold the soil until those roots take over. Use biodegradable coir or plant-fiber netting across the slope, never plastic landscape fabric. The coir rots away once the roots are deep, and the plants grow straight through the open weave. Plastic fabric blocks that growth, traps water above the roots, and ends up shredding into the bank a few years later.

Get the netting and the roots working together, and the washing stops for good.
