The best rain garden soil is a loose sandy loam that drains fast and still feeds your plants. A good rain garden soil mix blends sand, compost, and topsoil so water sinks in within hours instead of pooling on top for days. The goal is dirt that handles a downpour and then dries out, so your plants never sit in a puddle.
The test hole I dug in the heavy clay corner behind my garage still held water the next morning, right under the downspout. I worked coarse sand and compost into that ground, and the next storm drained out by lunch. The texture of the dirt set the result, not the weather and not luck. Heavy clay packs tight and traps water, while a sandy blend leaves gaps for water to slip through and keep moving down.
Aim for soil that drains at least 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) per hour. That speed lets a storm clear out before mosquitoes can breed and before roots sit too long in water. Native clay alone rarely hits this mark, so you loosen it with sand and compost until water moves down quickly. The sand opens up channels for drainage, and the compost feeds your plants and keeps the soil from baking into a hard crust.
Test your soil infiltration rate before you buy a single bag of anything. Dig a hole 6 inches (15 cm) deep, fill it with water, and let it drain. UNL Extension says a healthy site clears that hole within 24 hours. If the water is still sitting there the next day, your ground is too tight as it stands. I ran this same test in three spots across my yard. The one that drained best is where I built the bed. That quick check saved me from digging into a soggy low corner.
A slow site is not a dead end. You can amend clay instead of giving up on the spot you picked. Mix coarse sand and compost across the top 12 inches (30 cm) so the soil infiltration rate climbs. Many garden beds end up close to 60% sand, with the rest split between compost and the topsoil you already have. Use coarse builder sand, not fine play sand, because the fine grains pack down and can lock up clay even tighter than before.
Some ground just will not drain no matter what you add. Penn State Extension flags soil that drains slower than 0.2 inches (0.5 cm) per hour as a spot that needs an underdrain. That means a perforated pipe set in gravel under the bed to carry off the extra water. Run your drain test first so you know which camp you are in.
Top the finished bed with 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) of shredded hardwood mulch. The mulch holds moisture between storms, blocks weeds, and keeps the surface from crusting over and shedding water. Skip dyed or floating bark, since it washes away in the first big rain and clogs your inlet. Pull the mulch back a few inches from plant stems so they do not rot at the base.
Get the dirt right and the rest of the garden takes care of itself. Test the drainage, loosen heavy clay with sand and compost toward that 0.25 inch per hour mark, and cap it with hardwood mulch. Do that and your rain garden will swallow a downpour and dry out within a day.
