The clearest sign of success is simple. Standing water should clear within 24 to 48 hours after a storm. Anything longer and you have a mosquito pond, not a rain garden. Most home gardens run 100 to 300 square feet (9 to 28 square meters), which is enough to catch the runoff from your roof and driveway. Size it to the area feeding it, not to the spare space in your yard. A bed that is too small overflows in the first heavy rain and sends the extra water right back where you did not want it.
Good rain garden site selection starts with where the water already wants to go. Pick a natural low spot that sits at least 10 feet (3 meters) from your foundation so you never push water back toward the house. Keep it 25 feet (7.6 meters) from a septic field too. Then test the soil. Dig a 6-inch hole, fill it with water, and watch it drain. You want at least 0.25 inches per hour, which means that hole should empty within 24 hours.
Depth is the piece most people guess at. Match the basin depth to your slope and never go past 8 inches (20 centimeters). On a near-flat yard, 3 to 5 inches is plenty. A steeper grade needs a deeper basin to hold the same volume. Too deep and water pools for days, which drowns the roots and breeds bugs. Too shallow and it overflows before it can soak in. I dug mine to about 6 inches on a gentle slope and it has handled every storm since.
Plants are where a rain garden earns its keep over the long haul. Deep-rooted native perennials, grasses, and sedges punch channels into packed soil that turf grass roots never reach. In one clay-soil study, native prairie plantings soaked up water over three times faster than turf grass in the same ground. Pick species that shrug off both a few days underwater and a dry August, and your garden keeps draining year after year. Your plant list does more for long-term performance than any other choice you make.
