Overview
Of the houseplants that flower happily indoors, the African violet remains among the most generous, a habit carried down from the cool, mist-wrapped highlands of Tanzania. The name is a charming misdirection, since the plant claims no kinship with true violets. Its place is among the Gesneriads, the same refined company as the streptocarpus gracing so many sills. A later reclassification drew it into the genus Streptocarpus, which is why a label reading Saintpaulia and one reading Streptocarpus ionanthus describe a single plant.
It is the form that earns it a place in a room. A low, plush rosette of fuzzy, rounded leaves rests against the soil, and from its heart rise small flowers in purple, pink, white, or blue, a quiet bloom that suits a bedside table or a kitchen sill. The plant keeps an obliging scale, only 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) across, so a mature one settles neatly onto a single saucer. Set it in a thoughtful corner and it offers buds in close to every month of the year.
Its moderate standing rests on a pair of small temperaments rather than any genuine demand. The velvety leaves will mark wherever cold water touches them, and the crown will rot under soil left too wet. Learn to water from beneath with tepid water and to read the light, and the plant repays that modest attention with one flush of bloom after another.

Light
Place it in soft indirect light at an east or north window, where the leaves catch a generous glow yet escape the glare of midday. It will make do with medium light and a measure of shade, though bloom thins once the spot grows too dim. Beneath a fluorescent or LED light for 14 to 16 hours a day, it keeps flowering through the dull stretch of winter.
Water
Hold the soil evenly moist, never sodden, letting the top inch dry before the next drink. Water from beneath: rest the pot in warm or room-temperature water for about 30 minutes, then let it drain. Because cold water and stray droplets bruise the velvety leaves into pale rings, keep the foliage dry, and remember that excess water is the foremost cause of crown and root rot.
Soil
Give it a loose, porous, free-draining soilless mix in place of dense garden soil. A packaged African violet blend will serve, or compose 3 parts sphagnum peat moss with 2 parts vermiculite and 1 part perlite and a little lime. A gently acidic pH of 6.2 to 6.5 sits best with the roots.

Warm, even rooms keep it at ease, somewhere between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C). Cold drafts and chill nights dull its pace and can hold its flowers in check. Settle it clear of cold glass and the dry rush of a heating vent.
Humidity
Ordinary indoor air suits it well, with 40% to 60% humidity striking the ideal. Lift the moisture too high without good airflow and you make a home for powdery mildew and Botrytis. A little air between plants tends them better than any daily misting.
Feeding
Feed once a month through the growing and flowering months, from spring into fall, with a balanced or African violet fertilizer. Keep it light, at a quarter to half the label strength, since a heavy hand favors leaf over flower. Rinse the pot through with plain water from time to time to carry off the salts that gather.
Pruning
Lift away spent flowers and any tired or yellowed leaves to keep the rosette trim and temper the threat of Botrytis. Where a single, neat crown is wanted, pinch off the offset suckers as they rise. That light grooming is the whole of the task, for the plant asks for no hard cutting back.

A soft, darkened crown with collapsing leaves
This is crown and root rot, and it nearly always follows from overwatering or soil pressed against the crown. Lift the plant and you meet decayed roots and a soft, discolored base. One this far gone seldom recovers, so part with it, then begin anew in a clean pot of porous mix with the crown held above the soil line.

Twisted, hairy center growth with curled edges and lost buds

Gray-brown fuzzy mold on leaves or faded flowers
This is Botrytis blight, a fungus that takes to dead or fading tissue and travels through damp, still air. It tends to begin on a spent flower or the underside of a leaf before it spreads. Clear the dead material away, keep the foliage dry, and grant the plant kinder airflow.

Pale spots or rings marking the velvety leaves
This traces to cold water meeting the foliage, often a single droplet that lingered and bleached the tissue below. The marks are merely cosmetic, though they never fade once set. Move to watering from below or to room-temperature water, keep the leaves dry, and lift away the most blemished among them.

Myths
The African violet is a true violet, a relative of the wild Viola.
The name has misled many, yet the two plants share no relation at all. African violets belong with the Gesneriads, the company of streptocarpus, while the true violets fall to Viola. All they truly hold in common is the cast of the flower.
Never let a drop of water rest on the leaves.
The genuine trouble is cold water on the velvety foliage, which is what bleaches those pale spots and rings. Tepid, room-temperature water works no such harm, and a drink drawn from below avoids the matter entirely. Pour warm water and the leaves stay flawless while the soil keeps its moisture.
Its botanical name is still Saintpaulia ionantha.
Taxonomy has carried it forward. Kew's Plants of the World Online now holds Streptocarpus ionanthus as the accepted name, after the old genus Saintpaulia was drawn into Streptocarpus. The 1893 name Saintpaulia ionantha endures as a synonym, so both labels rest on one plant.
