A member of the cabbage family, it grows fast as the air cools and drives a thick taproot straight down through packed soil, and that root is the reason it belongs in the rotation at all.
Sown as summer slips into fall, it fills out over about two months, and then the first hard freeze brings its season to a clean close in cold zones. That winterkill is the point of the whole arrangement.
