Overview
An intriguing carnivore to bring into a home (genus Utricularia, family Lentibulariaceae), this one catches its own food underwater. It grows wild on every continent except Antarctica, with some forms rooting in soggy ground and others drifting free across still water, yet all of them hunt with tiny bladder traps that snap shut on microscopic prey.
Each trap is a hollow sac that pumps itself empty, then springs open in a fraction of a second when a passing protozoan or water flea grazes a trigger hair, sweeping in water and prey together. That is how the plant draws the nutrients its nutrient-poor home cannot offer, which is exactly why feeding or fertilizing does it harm.
Treat it like a slice of bog rather than a typical houseplant and it asks very little of a daily routine. Keep the medium constantly wet with mineral-free water, set it where the light is bright, and otherwise leave it be; get the water right and the rest of a windowsill or shelf setup falls into place.
Care
The short version: bright light, distilled or rainwater only, and a lean peat-and-sand mix kept constantly wet; never fertilize, and never let it dry out.
Light
Give it bright, indirect light, the kind a bright windowsill spot offers; it will take partial to full sun once acclimated. Light drives flowering, so a leafy plant that refuses to bloom is simply asking for more of it.
Water
This is the make-or-break detail. Use only distilled, reverse-osmosis, or rainwater, since tap or mineral water kills it. Keep terrestrial types soggy in a tray of 1 to 3 cm of pure water, grow aquatic types submerged or free-floating, and never let the medium dry out.
Soil
Reach for a lean mix of peat and silica sand, roughly half and half, with no nutrients added. A pH of 4.0 to 6.0 holds the acidic range it prefers, and aquatic types need no soil at all.
Temperature
It stays comfortable across 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C), a span that covers ordinary room temperatures with room to spare, so it settles into most homes without fuss.
Humidity
It likes the air humid, around 50% to 80%. A standing-water tray beneath terrestrial types lifts the local humidity, and aquatic types already live submerged.
Feeding
Skip feeding altogether. The bladder traps catch all the nutrients the plant needs from microscopic prey, and fertilizer usually kills it.
Pruning
Very little is called for; trim away spent flower stalks and clear any dead or decomposing mat to keep the medium clean.
Repotting
Refresh it every 1 to 2 years as the peat breaks down. Repot when the mat overflows the pot edges, when the medium has decomposed, or when vigor and flowering fade.

Myths
That a bladderwort has to be fed meat or insects, the way a Venus flytrap is.
The traps are sized for microscopic prey such as protozoa and water fleas, not for chunks; meat or insects simply rot in the medium. The plant feeds itself from the water and needs no help from you.
That carnivorous plants need fertilizer to grow well.
They evolved in nutrient-poor bogs and draw what they need straight from the water; fertilizer or mineral-rich water usually kills them, the opposite of standard feeding advice.
